These transceivers draw between 120µA and 500µA of supply current when unloaded or fully loaded with disabled drivers. Additionally, the MAX481, MAX483, and MAX487 have a low-current shutdown mode in which they consume only 0.1µA. All parts operate from a single 5V supply.

A two channel Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (UART) for serial data transfers is called the SC16C2550B. Its main job is to transform serial data from parallel data and vice versa. Up to 5 Mbit/s of serial data rates can be handled by the UART.
The ST16C2550 and SC16C2550B are pin compatible. It will start up with the same functionality as the 16C2450. The SC16C2550B offers improved UART features, including data transfer in DMA mode, modem control interface, and 16-byte FIFOs. The FIFO trigger levels, TXRDYn, and RXRDYn signals regulate the data transmission in DMA mode. The user can access operational status and error signals using on-board status registers. Software may be used to modify system interruptions and modem control functions to accommodate particular user needs. 

One driver and one receiver are included in the MAX3080-MAX3089 high-speed transceivers for RS-485/RS-422 communication. When the receiver inputs are open or shorted, the devices' fail-safe circuitry ensures a logic-high receiver output. This means that if all transmitters on a terminated bus are turned off, the receiver output will be a logic high. By driving a selector pin with a single three-state driver, the MAX3089's slew rate may be changed between 115kbps, 500kbps, and 10Mbps. Normally, these transceivers consume 375µA of supply current while they are idle or fully loaded with the drivers turned off.

The SN65176B and SN75176B devices, both of which run off of a single 5V power supply, combine a 3-state differential line driver with a differential input line receiver. Activehigh and active-low enables on the driver and receiver, respectively, can be linked externally to work as a direction control. Internal connections between the driver differential outputs and the receiver differential inputs create differential input/output (I/O) bus ports that are intended to load the bus as little as possible when the driver is deactivated or VCC = 0. Wide positive and negative common-mode voltage ranges on these ports make the gadget appropriate for partyline applications.
