The real-timeclocks (RTCs) DS12885, DS12887, and DS12C887 are designed to be straight alternatives for the DS1285 and DS1287. A real-time clock/calendar, one time-of-day alarm, three maskable interrupts with a common interrupt output, a programmable square wave, and 114 bytes of battery-backed static RAM are all included in the devices (113 bytes in the DS12C887 andDS12C887A). In a 24-pin enclosed DIP device, the DS12887 incorporates a quartz crystal and a lithium energy supply. The DS12C887 adds a century byte to the 32h address.For months with fewer than 31 days, the date at the end of the month is automatically changed on all devices, including adjustment for leap years. The gadgets also have an AM/PM indicator and may be set to work in either a 24-hour or 12-hour mode. The status of VCC is monitored using a precision temperature-compensated circuit. When the device detects a primary power outage, it immediately switches to a backup supply. When primary power is unavailable, a lithium coin-cell battery can be attached to the VBAT input pin of the DS12885 to keep the time and date running. A multiplexed byte-wide interface is used to access the device, which supports both Intel and Motorola modes.

Low-power serial real-time clock (RTC) with 56 bytes of NVRAM is the M41T11. The clock/calendar function uses a built-in 32.768 kHz oscillator (driven by an external crystal) and the first 8 bytes of RAM, which are programmed in binary-coded decimal (BCD) format. A two-line, bidirectional bus is used to serially send addresses and data. After every write or read of a data byte, the built-in address register is automatically increased. A power sensor circuit incorporated into the M41T11 clock detects power outages and automatically switches to the battery source when one occurs. A tiny lithium coin battery can provide the necessary power to run the clock and RAM.
